Dear Colleagues:

I was born on the day Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. While I was too young of course to realize it, 1968 was a remarkably traumatic year for our nation and families of seemingly unending division, violence and hopelessness.

While many of the wounds from that time remain unresolved, and while we have since endured 9/11, a pandemic, recessions, and escalating racial hatred and injustice, we have not witnessed an assault on our nation’s most cherished values that struck at the heart of our democracy like the events of yesterday. As I continue to talk with our public health experts, visit schools to talk with employees, and hear from our parents and students, I’m learning a great deal about the depth of challenges we all face. I’m also learning about the incredible talent, determination and caring of our families and staff, qualities that cannot be diminished by a virus. And, I’m learning that I have not said “thank you” enough.

Return to School 2020-21

Dear Colleagues,

At their upcoming meeting on October 8, the Albemarle County School Board will decide whether the school division will progress to the next stage of reopening (from Stage 2 to Stage 3). The school division will remain in its current stage (Stage 2) through at least the end of the first quarter. The Board’s decision will impact the second quarter of the school year, which begins on November 9. Continue reading

The 2020 Golden Apple Awards, sponsored by Better Living Building Supply and Cabinetry, were presented through a virtual ceremony yesterday, May 21. The awards honored 44 teachers from public and private schools in Albemarle County and Charlottesville City for excellence in teaching and active community involvement.
