Our youth publishing website that accompanies the PBS documentary American Creed, is now live. Teachers, librarians, and youth mentors are invited to engage young people as they work towards responding to the film through writing, media, or art using any of the five invitations created by educators. Adults at schools and learning centers can create accounts for youth to publish their work to a national, or even international, audience. Continue reading

If you know of youth, ages 13-21, who would benefit from a fun-filled, youth-led summer summit focusing on self-determination skills, please share this announcement with them. Celebrate Digital Learning Day and Black History Month with a dynamic and interactive webcast! On February 22, at 10 a.m. and again at 1 p.m., the National WWII Museum presents Fighting for the Right to Fight: African American Experiences in World War II. In this interactive cross-country journey, students in grades 6-12 learn how the pursuit for both victory and equality shaped the story of World War II and transformed the U.S. for decades to come.

The Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (VAHPERD) has extended the due date for the 2017-18 Film/Video Competition to March 15, 2018. This competition is part of VAHPERD’s Choose Your Vibe – Arrive Alive underage drinking and impaired driving campaign funded through a highway safety alcohol grant from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The competition allows middle and high school students to develop short persuasive videos that encourage students to make safe and healthy choices, and by doing so prevent underage drinking and impaired driving. Start Something Saturday is bringing together students in grades 8-12 from the Charlottesville-Albemarle area for a day of project brainstorming on November 11! Students are invited to bring their ideas or just their interest in creative projects, and by the end of the day, they’ll walk out with a project around something they care about. The Library of Virginia, in collaboration with Dominion Energy, invites high schools students in Virginia to honor outstanding African Americans by participating in the 2018 Strong Men & Women in Virginia History student writing contest. Students should submit their 400-word essay online by midnight on Friday, November 10, 2017, for a chance to win an Apple MacBook Air and $1,000 for their school.
