Weigh in on the New Language Arts Standards: Public Hearing TONIGHT, Dec. 14

InputNew language arts standards are coming …

The proposed English Standards of Learning went before the Board of Education for first review on October 27. A series of public hearings are being held around the commonwealth. Locally, there is a public hearing TONIGHT, December 14, 7 p.m. at Albemarle High School. Registration of speakers will begin at 6:30. Speakers will have three minutes to speak and should bring copies of their comments for the Board of Education. Continue reading

Spread the Word: CATEC Open House on December 14

Please help spread the word: The Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC) invites interested students and their families to their Open House on Wednesday, December 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. Attendees will receive a facility tour, meet the instructors, learn about the various program offerings, and observe student demonstrations. Refreshments will be provided.

All County Drama Day: Inspiring Students to Pursue Their Passions

All County Drama Day 2016Middle and high school drama students from around the county gathered on October 21 for improv and some fabulous performances at Monticello High School, thanks to the organizational skills and hosting of Madeline Michel.

Throughout the day, drama students from Albemarle and Monticello high schools lead improv activities through such games as Freeze, Validate, Party Quirks, and Park Bench. Hilarity ensued as students got acquainted with one another amidst enthusiastic audience participation. Continue reading

Rio+29 Small Area Plan Community Meeting – Dec. 12

On December 12, the Rio+29 Small Area Plan project team will be sharing three land use alternative maps and soliciting feedback on which best achieves the community’s priorities for redevelopment of the Rio+29 area. The comments received at the community meeting will be used to develop a recommended land use map that will form the basis of the Rio+29 Small Area Plan, a guide for the form of future re/development.

16th Annual Golden Apple Awards: Nominations Now Open!

Golden Apple AwardsNominations are now open for the 16th annual Golden Apple Awards, a program designed to honor outstanding teachers in public and private schools in Albemarle County and Charlottesville City. One winner from each school will receive a Golden Apple and gift certificates from local businesses. Eight award recipients also will receive a $1,000 Golden Apple Grant, which can be used for classroom materials or professional development.

Nominations will be accepted by colleagues, students, and community members through February 2, 2017! Access the nomination form on the Golden Apple Awards web page, as well as details about eligibility, nomination criteria, the nomination and selection processes, and more.
