UPDATE: Payroll Process Change

PayrollA message from Susan Worrell, Chief Accountant, County of Albemarle (Oct. 3, 2016)

The Finance Department partnered with Human Resources to propose changing the payroll process for the month of December, a process that was established many years ago in order to eliminate the need for school employees to interrupt their holiday break in order to pick up their paychecks. To accomplish this, a separate payroll for ACPS employees was processed and paychecks were issued before the holiday break. With the implementation of direct deposit, however, this practice is no longer necessary; employee pay is available and directly deposited on the last business day of every month!

We offered the opportunity for comments regarding this proposed change over a 10-day period. We appreciate receiving your comments and feedback from those who participated. However, of approximately 3,000 ACPS employees, we received only 42 comments; of those approximately 50% were in favor of change. Therefore, all employees will be paid on the last business day of the month. While we are always mindful of the impact on employees’ pay when any change is made to payroll processes, we don’t believe this change will cause an inconvenience for the vast majority of employees yet it does allow the Finance Department to gain operational efficiency savings and offers Albemarle County as a whole the opportunity to be better stewards of our taxpayers’ resources.
