What Is Deeper Learning?
The combination of (1) a deeper understanding of core academic content, (2) the ability to apply that understanding to novel problems and situations, and (3) the development of a range of competencies, including people skills and self control, is called deeper learning. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation—a leader in the national initiative to promote deeper learning in schools—has defined deeper learning as “a set of competencies students must master in order to develop a keen understanding of academic content and apply their knowledge to problems in the classroom and on the job.” Continue reading
Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk This Saturday, October 18!
In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 13.3 minutes, claiming more than 39,500 lives each year. The Out of the Darkness Community Walks are the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) signature fundraising campaign, bringing together family, friends, colleagues and supporters at 3-5 mile walks in hundreds of communities across the country. Join the first local Out of the Darkness Community Walk this Saturday, October 18, at East End, Green Springs (near Zion Crossroads in Louisa County). New Process: Bereavement Notification
The new Bereavement Notification page has launched! The Human Resources Department will send flowers in memory of a regular County employee’s immediate family member, defined by policy as the employee’s spouse or the employee’s or spouse’s child, parent, sibling, or grandparent.
Notification/requests can be submitted 24 hours/day from any location (login required) by any employee who learns of a death in a County employee’s family. Continue reading

Design for Change Challenge – Project Submissions Due by May 15, 2015
Elementary teachers: Design for Change is the largest global movement designed to give children an opportunity to express their own ideas for a better world and put them into action. The challenge asks students to design solutions for the world’s greatest challenges by doing four very simple things: FEEL (anything that bothers them), IMAGINE (brainstorm ways to make it better), DO (implement the act of change), and SHARE (send the stories to inspire others). From reducing the weight of backpacks to converting garbage dumps into playgrounds to designing alternatives to packaged food, school children across the globe are “dreaming up and leading brilliant ideas.” Continue reading
