Announcing “Reframing the Narrative” Cohorts for Elementary Teachers

We are pleased to announce that we are forming cohorts for Reframing the Narrative for elementary educators. Over the last two years, secondary teachers have been participating in this project with the purpose of co-constructing anti-racist and culturally responsive social studies curricula. This year, we are inviting all K-5 educators to apply to be a part of this exciting project, which will include a pathway toward a micro-credential or certification in Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT).

Commitments

Participants will commit to the following:

  • Pursue CRT micro-credentialing or certification by:
    • Attending training for Modules 1-3 with the RtN cohort; and
    • Participating in either a division or school-based cohort for certification or micro-credentialing.
  • Attend a weekend workshop at Montpelier that will include expert-led sessions focused on pedagogy, place-based learning, and instructional resource curation.
  • Read and do a book talk on a notable trade book that reflects our anti-racist and culturally responsive design principles.
  • Participate in a book study related to CRT certification or micro-credentialing.
  • Participate in a three-day Inquiry Design Model (IDM) workshop in the summer of 2022.
  • Complete all surveys and evaluation tools.

Incentives

  • $500 for participation in all cohort activities
  • $375 for participation in the IDM workshop
  • $500/$1000 for successful micro-credential/certification

In order to apply, elementary educators must complete the 2021-22 Reframing the Narrative Application.

Draft Calendar

Kickoff Event | September 23, 2021 (Grades 3-5) | September 29, 2021 (Grades K-2)

Participants will engage with CRT modules 1 and 3, which focus on (1) our cultural identity as educators and how that influences what and how we teach, and (2) family and how we can leverage family and community partnerships to help our students be successful. Additionally, a presentation by Dr. Johari Harris will address how social psychology can inform the appropriate curricula for our learners.

Micro-Credential or Certification Cohort Meetings | Ongoing (Grades K-5)

Participants will work as part of a division cohort for either micro-credential or certification.

Book Study | Ongoing

Participants will join affinity groups based on the professional learning book they want to read and form book study groups to help bridge the connection to CRT.

Montpelier Summit on Teaching Whole Truth History to Our Youngest Learners
November 12-14, 2021 (Grades 3-5) | March 4-6, 2022 (Grades K-2)

Participants will engage in a three-day workshop experience at Montpelier that will feature experts in the field of anti-racist education and culturally responsive teaching for our youngest learners. Educators will learn from experts in the field while using the exhibits at Montpelier as touchstones for how to approach whole truth history. Participants will also focus on curating the best possible instructional resources to support the goals of cultural responsiveness and anti-racism.

Inquiry Design Model Workshop | Three Days in Late June (Grades K-5)

Participants will be trained on the IDM model and will create an inquiry that aligns to our curricular values.
