Apply for a 2018-19 Shannon Grant by April 20

Shannon-Foundation-BannerThe Edgar and Eleanor Shannon Foundation for Excellence in Public Education wants to help teachers and schools implement their best ideas. Two levels of proposals are invited for the 2018-19 school year:

  • Level 1 grants, not to exceed $750, will be awarded to classroom teachers, individually or in teams, for projects that support original and innovative student activities.
  • Level 2 grants, not to exceed $5,000, may be awarded to schools for creative projects that enhance student learning across age and grade levels.

Deadline for VAHPERD’s Annual Film Festival Competition Extended to Mar. 15

VAHPERD LogoThe Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (VAHPERD) has extended the due date for the 2017-18 Film/Video Competition to March 15, 2018. This competition is part of VAHPERD’s Choose Your Vibe – Arrive Alive underage drinking and impaired driving campaign funded through a highway safety alcohol grant from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The competition allows middle and high school students to develop short persuasive videos that encourage students to make safe and healthy choices, and by doing so prevent underage drinking and impaired driving. Inclusion Project: Submit a Mini-Grant Application by Jan. 29

VCU School of Education Partnership for People with DisabilitiesThe Virginia Department of Education, in collaboration with the Partnership for People with Disabilities, supports the Inclusion Project, a youth-led initiative to increase disability awareness in schools. Beginning January 2018, the Inclusion Project is pleased to announce it is offering up to 6 mini grants (max: $2,000) to support K-12 schools interested in planning an Inclusion Project event. Fostering Support of Mathematics Learning in Multilingual Classrooms | Deadline: Nov. 30
A grant of up to $4,000 will be awarded to a PreK-12 school for in-service to increase understanding and expertise in fostering support of multi-language development when teaching mathematics.

Strong Men & Women in Virginia History 2018The Library of Virginia, in collaboration with Dominion Energy, invites high schools students in Virginia to honor outstanding African Americans by participating in the 2018 Strong Men & Women in Virginia History student writing contest. Students should submit their 400-word essay online by midnight on Friday, November 10, 2017, for a chance to win an Apple MacBook Air and $1,000 for their school. Design for Change Challenge: Submission Deadline Extended to May 18

Design for Change USADesign for Change USA has launched their 2017-18 challenge! Design for Change is a global movement of young people who are changing the world!

How does it work? Any group of young people (K-12) with an adult mentor (teacher, parent, youth leader, or coach) dreams up and leads social change projects in their own schools or communities using the Design for Change methodology—Feel.
