2018-19 School Year Calendar
The School Board approved the 2018-19 School Year Calendar during their regularly scheduled meeting on January 11, 2018. The approved calendar can be downloaded in both English and Spanish from the division-level Calendars web page.
School Board Meeting Update
Last month, I sent you a report on the December 14 School Board meeting as a way of keeping you informed about the issues being considered by the Board and their decisions. I’d like to send these reports after each Board meeting, since so many of our Board’s actions will impact you.
The Board has met twice since December 14, including their organizational and first business meeting of 2018 on January 11. Also, last evening, a special meeting was held during which Dr. Moran and I presented the 2018-19 fiscal year funding request for our school division. Continue reading →
Additional Day of Holiday Leave Granted to 12-Month Employees
In alignment with the state’s holiday schedule, and in concert with local government’s decision, the Albemarle County School Board has granted 12-month employees an additional day of holiday leave on Tuesday, January 2, 2018. All school division offices will close at noon on Friday, December 22, and will reopen for normal business hours on Wednesday, January 3. Best wishes for a happy, healthy, joy-filled holiday!
Recent School Board Actions
Recognizing that not all of you have the opportunity to access our School Board meetings, I’d like to report on the significant actions at each meeting that may impact you. At their meeting this past Thursday, December 14, the School Board made three such decisions.
Dr. Pamela Moran Will Retire as Superintendent on June 30; Dr. Matthew Haas Appointed as Successor
During its work session on Thursday, September 28, the Albemarle County School Board appointed Dr. Matthew Haas as the school division’s 20th Superintendent, succeeding Dr. Pamela Moran, who announced her retirement yesterday. Dr. Moran will retire on June 30, 2018, and Dr. Haas’ appointment takes effect the next day, July 1. March 23 Board Meeting Will Focus on Academies & CATEC
March 23, 2017 | 6:30 p.m. | CATEC
Tomorrow evening, March 23, the School Board will conduct a work session focused on the school division’s three academies—Albemarle High School’s Math, Engineering & Science Academy (MESA); Monticello’s Health and Medical Sciences Academy (HMSA); and Western Albemarle’s Environmental Studies Academy (ESA). Also included is a review and discussion of programs offered at the Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC). Make-up Days & Next Year’s Calendar
2016-17 Make-up Days
School now will be in session on both February 20 and March 31, 2017, to make up for recent school closures due to snow. March 31 will serve as the last day of the 3rd 9-week grading period.

Letter to Employees: 2016 Bond Referendum
This November, in addition to electing a new president and vice president, as well as a new House of Representatives member, Albemarle County voters will have the opportunity to cast a ballot that will directly impact 25 of our schools. For the first time in more than 40 years, voters will be asked to consider whether Albemarle County should issue general obligation bonds to finance capital improvement projects for local schools.
