JMRL Annual Street Party: Summer Reading KICK-OFF HULLABALOO

JMRL LogoCelebrate the sweet start of summer fun at the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library’s annual street party (Central Branch), June 7th from 10 a.m. to noon. Don’t miss face painting from 10 to 11, or the chance to check out the Friends’ mini-book sale. Enjoy popcorn and doughnuts, and sign up for your Summer Reading Club of choice—adults, teens, or kids.

Summer Fine Arts Academy Now Accepting Registrations

Fine Arts LogoACPS is launching its first Fine Arts Academy this summer from July 21-25! Students currently in grades 6-11 (rising 7th – 12th graders for 2014-15) can choose to spend their week focused on art, creative writing, dance, drama, choir, or jazz band. The registration fee is $100 for all sessions that run from 9 a.m. to noon. Art students have the option of adding three hours to their class for an additional $50. 2014 ACTION! High School Director Competition

VA Film FestivalThe Virginia Film Festival (VFF) encourages students to take their passion for filmmaking and create an entry for ACTION!, the VFF’s High School Director Competition. The 2014 ACTION! Competition is open to rising 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students who are current residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia. One Grand Prize winner will receive a check for $1,000, and two runners-up will each receive a check for $500. Complete applications with accompanying films must be postmarked or delivered by Wednesday, August 20, 2014. Learn more >>>

2014 Junior Folklorist Challenge – Submissions Due May 26

Folklorist ChallengeThe Smithsonian Center for Folklore and Cultural Heritage and ePals present the 2014 Junior Folklorist Challenge. Discover a tradition in your community and share the story with the world!

Using the Folklorist Process—research, document, interpret, present—participants, ages 8-18, are asked to examine a local or regional tradition through the eyes of a community tradition bearer and create a video, podcast or slide show to share the story. Continue reading

2014 STEM Essay Contest – Application Deadline: March 30

VA Council on WomenYoung women in their junior or senior year in high school who hold at least a 2.5 GPA are invited to participate in the 2014 STEM Essay Contest, presented by the Virginia Council on Women in collaboration with the Science Museum of Virginia. The awardee will receive a $5,000 scholarship to an institution of higher education. Entries must be received by 9 p.m. on March 30, 2014. Governor Terry McAuliffe and First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe serve as Honorary Co-Chairs for the contest. Find out more >>>

Extreme Journey Summer Camp: Registration Now Open!

JTHG LogoRegistration is now underway for the annual Extreme Journey Summer Camp. Offered in partnership between Albemarle County Public Schools and The Journey Through Hallowed Ground, this program provides rising 6th, 7th and 8th grade students the opportunity to hike, bike, tube and canoe their way through several sites along our National Heritage Area, running from Gettysburg to Monticello. This year’s camp instructors will be the dynamic duo of Julie Stavitski, Social Studies teacher at Jack Jouett, and Laura Lewis, ESOL teacher at Cale.
