Dear Colleagues:

Albemarle County Public Schools staff are working hard to develop a draft budget for next school year. Your views are an important part of that work. This fall, we hosted several community conversations in which we invited students, employees, families, and advisory groups to share ideas for improving teaching and learning in our schools. Assessment Tool Review: Illuminate

Teachers: ACPS strives to provide the best possible instructional tools for you and our students. Industry best practice is to review instructional tools periodically to ensure they are meeting our school division’s needs. The contract for our assessment tool, Illuminate, is up this year for a comprehensive review.

Beginning today, employees are being asked to share their opinions on our calendar committee’s first draft of the 2022-23 school calendar: Click here to take our employee survey.

The state department of education requires school divisions to provide either 180 instructional days or 990 clock hours of instruction per year. The draft calendar for 2022-23 reduces the number of instructional days to 175; however, it still delivers more than 990 clock hours of instruction. The reduction in instructional days will provide teachers with more workdays, more professional development opportunities, and additional time to meet the individual learning needs of students. As one of its objectives, Goal 3 of the school division’s new strategic plan, Learning for All, focuses on developing sustainable and modern facilities, infrastructure and equipment as a means to transform learning experiences and opportunities for students. Strategies affiliated with this goal include developing long-range plans to address overcrowding, partnering with local government on strategies to fund capital projects, and developing an equitable and sustainable process for guiding renovations and improvements.

In support of this goal, the Long-Range Planning Advisory Committee (LRPAC) requests your input on the priorities that should guide their selection of facility improvement projects. Continue reading

Every five to seven years, ACPS takes an opportunity to work with its students, employees, families and community to create a new strategic plan. The plan acts as a guide to how we define the direction that our school division will take over the next several years. It includes our vision and mission for the school division, as well as our hopes for all of our students and how we will allocate resources to make those a reality. Continue reading

Teacher Survey to Inform the 2021-22 School Year – Please Participate by April 28

Classroom Teachers: As we shared earlier this week, Superintendent Haas has announced that the school division is planning to offer five days per week of in-person instruction at all school sites for students in all grades next school year. In addition, he announced that the division will offer an all-virtual school for elementary, middle and high school students. The all-virtual school will have its own principal and teaching staff and provide synchronous instruction to students.

Families Being Asked to Help With Planning for Summer, New School Year

At a special School Board meeting on May 6, Superintendent Haas will be making his recommendation to the School Board on how schools should operate next August when the 2021-22 school year begins. To make the most informed recommendation possible, we are beginning the process of gathering information from families and staff.

Tomorrow, families across the school division will receive an initial survey on their early preferences for summer programming and next year’s instructional model. Continue reading

The Speak Up Survey is a district and national research initiative designed to amplify the voices and perspectives of students, families and teachers about technology and learning. Input from you and your students will impact how ACPS uses technology to support schools.
