As part of their 2014 Community MLK Celebration, the University of Virginia Curry School of Education presents Growing Leaders of Tomorrow: Mindsets, Diversity, and the Dream on Wednesday January 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Bavaro Hall, Room 116.
During this session, we will extend discussions about mindsets held during the fall semester. Through his provocative poetry and positive rap, Mr. Omékongo Dibinga will share stories about those who both hindered and fostered his journey into a growth mindset. He then will describe motivational tools that can be used to cultivate growth mindsets among all members of diverse communities. Come join us for what promises to be a useful and enlightening experience that is in keeping with Dr. King’s dream! Please RSVP to this free public event.
Event Description: During the 2012-13 academic year, the Curry School of Education launched its inaugural common reading experience, which became known as the Big Read. This year’s selection is Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, by Carol Dweck. During the fall semester we primarily explored this content through the lens of the self. This semester, we will examine how macro-level, institutional, and historical factors may influence our views about the potential of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Through his provocative poetry and positive rap, Mr. Dibinga will share stories about those who both hindered and fostered his development of a growth mindset. He then will describe motivational tools that can be used to cultivate growth mindsets among all members of an institution or organization. Following this presentation, Mr. Dibinga and a diverse group of leaders and future leaders from the Albemarle/Charlottesville community will explore mindsets through the lenses of gender, race, disability, and language. Come join us for what will be a useful and enlightening experience that is in keeping with Dr. King’s dream!
