Board Meeting Highlights
Following are highlights from the school board meeting on May 9, 2024. You can view the full May 9 meeting agenda in ESB. You can also watch a recording of the May 9 meeting on our YouTube page.
Policy Review & Revisions
Virginia Code requires all school board policies to be reviewed at least every five years and revised as needed. On May 9, three policies were presented for action:
- GCL, Professional Development
- JOF, Security Cameras
- BHH, Student Representative to the School Board

Recognition of Observances
Board members read the following resolution and proclamations in honor of three observances:
- Resolution: National Teacher Appreciation Week
- Proclamation: National School Nurse Day
- Proclamation: Mental Health Awareness Month
Spotlight on Education
Dan Redding, Executive Director of Human Resources, presented the nominees for 2024 Teacher, Classified Employee, and Leader of the Year. The winners of each category, listed below, also addressed the board:
- 2024 Teacher of the Year: Sarah Reyes, English and geometry teacher and English Learners Department Chair, Albemarle High School
- 2024 Classified Employee of the Year: Carla Dodson, Fiscal Administrator I, Murray Elementary School
- 2024 Administrative Leader of the Year: Mark Leach, Assistant Director of Enterprise Applications and Web Services, Department of Technology
Senior Stay Day
Senior Stay Day is an annual, celebratory event co-hosted by ACPS and key partners to welcome graduates staying in the local area to the Albemarle County community and extend their networks of support, continuing educational opportunities, and meaningful employment. Following the 2024 event on April 23, staff presented an overview of Senior Stay Day.

High School Center II & Southern Feeder Pattern Elementary School
The design development plans for both High School Center II and the new Southern Feeder Pattern Elementary School were presented to the board. Approval to proceed to the construction document phase for both projects will be requested at the May 23 school board meeting.

PreK-12 Division Literacy Plan
In support of the adoption of a new K-5 literacy curriculum, Department of Instruction staff presented a PreK-12 Division Literacy Plan that outlines what ACPS believes about literacy for elementary and secondary education.
