Thank you for taking the time to participate in our survey regarding options for school makeup days for inclement weather. We had 6,033 responses from 4,058 parents; 1,331 staff members; and 644 students.
The following table reflects options for makeup days and their ranking in terms of “first choice” by participants. Ranking of first choices was the same for parents, staff and students.
The information you provided was shared with the School Board at their March 13 meeting. Your input was very helpful for the Board, and one of the outcomes was a decision to research the possibility of applying to the state for a waiver. At the present time, as stated in the calendar adopted by the School Board more than a year ago, required makeup days are being added to the end of the school year and the last day of school will be Friday, June 13, pending final approval by the Board.
Also based on your comments, the Board has asked for a revised calendar for the 2014-15 school year, adding several makeup days within the year, rather than adding them at the end of the year. This will be presented to the Board for a review at their work session on March 27.
We recognize decisions on how best to designate makeup days for time lost due to weather are difficult at best and disruptive to the plans of many families. We regret the inconvenience that can result. Our goal is to take actions that allow us to meet state requirements and provide the most amount of planning time for families and staff to make schedule adjustments. Your opinions help us to meet this goal and to serve the best educational interests of our students.
