Often in the immediacy of traumatic events like we experienced over the weekend here in Charlottesville, many of us are struggling to regain a sense of normalcy. It’s not uncommon that the full impact of the event may strike us days or even weeks later. As we heal as a community, it’s important that we pay attention to the signs of stress in order to aid the recovery process.
We are offering two sessions of “Acknowledging Traumatic Events” on Friday, August 18, for employees. This will be a time to learn about how we react to trauma and what support resources are available. Sessions are 30-45 minutes, and registration is not required.
- Friday, August 18 – 1 p.m. at COB McIntire, Room 241
- Friday, August 18 – 3 p.m. at COB 5th Street, Room A
We appreciate that these sessions may not fit all employees’ schedules, but there are more resources available. Dr. Bernard Hairston and Phil Giaramita have been working on instructional resources for staff and families.
In addition, Optima has shared two timely articles with us that speak directly to what we experienced this past weekend:
- Helping Ourselves Move Forward from the Recent Events in Charlottesville
- Monitoring Children’s News Exposure During and After a Disturbing, High-Profile Event
Please take this time to take care of yourselves and each other. If you feel the need to speak to someone about these events, or are concerned about a coworker or workgroup, do not hesitate to reach out to our EAP service. In addition to licensed clinicians, Optima EAP has providers specifically trained in dealing with critical incidents and the impact they have on the workplace. This free and confidential service is a simple phone call away at 800-899-8174, or you can learn more about our EAP program benefits for employees and their families via the BeWell Albemarle site.
