CodeVA is a non-profit that partners with schools, parents and communities to bring equitable computer science education to all of Virginia’s students. In partnership with the Virginia Department of Education, CodeVA is offering a summer series of FREE trainings for educators in seven locations throughout the state. Library of Virginia’s 9th Annual Teacher Institute
Join Library of Virginia staff members and guest speakers this August 1-3 for a FREE three-day Teacher Institute, presented in collaboration with Virginia Humanities and with support from the 2019 Commemoration. The 9th annual Brown Teacher Institute will examine the implications of immigration and the experiences of immigrants as they come to Virginia, focusing on the themes of democracy, diversity, and opportunity. Teachers will explore how to use primary sources to enhance student learning in their classrooms, discover new digital resources, and learn about the lives of immigrant and refugee students and their families in anticipation of the Library’s upcoming exhibition, New Virginians: 1619–2019 and Beyond, on display December 10, 2018 – November 23, 2019. 2018 Summer Institute for Aspiring and Practicing School Leaders

The $75 per person registration fee includes breakfast, lunch, and all conference sessions. This event is sponsored by a grant from the Wallace Foundation.

2018 Weinstein Properties Story of Virginia Teachers Institute
In conjunction with Longwood University, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture announces its Weinstein Properties Story of Virginia Teachers Institute for 2018.
Earn recertification points while exploring the history of Virginia, project-based learning, and teaching with primary sources! Choose between two sessions: July 9-13 or July 23-27.
The institute will be held at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture with a day-long field trip to the Robert Russa Moton Museum in Farmville, Virginia. Throughout the week teachers will examine stories from Virginia’s past through primary sources. Experts from the Virginia Museum of History & Culture and Longwood University will provide examples for project-based learning, performance-based assessments, and tips and techniques for engaging students in grades K-12.
The cost is $50, which will be refunded upon completion of the class. In addition, we require a letter of recommendation from your supervisor. Lunches and materials are provided free of charge, and participating teachers will be eligible for CEUs and recertification points.

VEA 2018 Local Officers Retreat

If you are a local or district Association officer, or will be soon, don’t miss the 2018 Local Officers Retreat, held at the University of Richmond July 15-17, 2018. The retreat is open to all local or district officers and includes differentiated content to make sure that all participants, regardless of their experience, will gain skills and confidence.
Attending the retreat is a great way to enhance your confidence and skills as an Association officer. Whether you are new or have a few years of experience in the role, LOR offers valuable content delivered by those who know the role best. There will be ample time to network with officers from Associations of a similar size, or to talk with participants who have several years of leadership experience under their belts.
