Our Governor’s Standards of Learning (SOL) Innovation Committee has been hard at work for over two years. They have examined assessment research; collected feedback from students, parents, educators, and community members; and analyzed testing data. Last year, five SOL tests (in grades 3-7) were eliminated by the General Assembly in response to recommendations from the Committee.
Recently the Committee released the second phase of its study, which goes further in recommendations to eliminate more tests and change the remaining tests to reflect performance-based assessments, developmentally appropriate construction and use, and the needs of special education and ESOL students.
