The Department of Technology has published the 2nd edition of our Technology and Digital Citizenship Field Guide for ACPS Families (also available in Spanish). This guide includes technology, digital citizenship, and device care resources for families, with a goal of providing families with information about technology in an approachable and educational way. The revised guide is now available digitally through our Digital Citizenship web page, and we will make printed copies available at schools in the fall.

When I became Superintendent of Schools in 2018, my first order of business was a Listening Tour. I met with hundreds of employees and students across our division to understand how I could best support you in your work, not just in providing resources, but in helping to create a climate that allowed you to prosper and grow as a professional.

If you read my Weekly Check-in on Friday, you know that one of the most important parts of my week, every week, are my visits to one of our schools or departments. Employee Engagement Survey Closes Today!

As we previously announced, the ACPS Department of Human Resources has partnered with Gallup, a global analytics and advice firm, to help us better understand and measure our employee engagement. On Monday, April 25, all non-temporary employees received an email directly from Gallup containing a unique link to participate in Gallup’s Q12 Employee Engagement Survey. Today, May 9, is the last day to participate in the survey.

The Department of Technology is seeking facilitators for CoderDojo, Albemarle’s coding and computer science camp. CoderDojo provides elementary students with opportunities for creativity, innovation and fun in an academy-like setting. This camp provides the perfect environment for teachers to explore new instructional strategies and technology tools aligned with the Virginia Department of Education’s computer science standards.

In addition to hearing from educators who are engaged in our collective work to eliminate practices that produce inequitable outcomes for students, participants will discover what it means to be an ACPS Culturally Responsive Educator. May Is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

According to the U.S. Census Bureau: 

In 1978, a joint congressional resolution established Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. The first 10 days of May were chosen to coincide with two important milestones in Asian/Pacific American history: the arrival in the United States of the first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) and contributions of Chinese workers to the building of the transcontinental railroad completed May 10, 1869. In 1992, Congress expanded the observance to a month-long celebration that is now known as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

In Albemarle County Public Schools, there are 782 students who identify as Asian and 12 students who identify as Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander. We encourage you to continue to build partnerships and produce relevant curriculum that honors the culture and experiences of these students and their families! Continue reading →

COVID Leave Bank Extension & Annual Leave Overage Reminder

With the expiration of the Families First Coronavirus Relief Act (FFCRA) Emergency Paid Sick Leave (EPSL) and Expanded FMLA (EFMLA) on September 30, 2021, Albemarle County Public Schools created a program called COVID Leave Bank, equivalent to 10 days of leave for all regular employees, effective October 1, 2021 – April 30, 2022. This program has now been extended through June 30, 2022, for continued use by employees who have not exhausted the 10 days of leave. Continue reading →
