Dear Colleagues:
I’d like to begin by thanking so many of you who joined Matt Haas, Lorna Gerome and me last week during our all-day online discussion of the 2016-17 funding request. Every one of our schools was logged on at one point or another, and we were grateful for the opportunity to share information on the funding request in depth and to take and answer your questions. Your engagement with this process is helpful as we work with the School Board to adopt a balanced budget for next year.

Monticello’s Learning Commons Receives National Coverage
Earlier this year, when Monticello High School’s Learning Commons won the 2015 Magna Award, Albemarle County Public Schools became the first school division in the country to twice be honored by the National School Boards Association (NSBA) as a national leader in innovative school programming. In its June 2015 issue of American School Board Journal, NSBA highlights the Learning Commons as an example of our division’s emphasis on project-based learning and on developing greater creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among all students. Albemarle County Public Schools’ Summer Fine Arts Academy provides students from our region an opportunity to spend an extended period of time studying a field of art of their choice under the direction of a highly qualified and engaging teacher. Albemarle Leadership Academy Accepting Applications Through May 1
Summer 2015 marks the 4th Annual Albemarle Leadership Academy! Applications are now being accepted to this exciting (and free!) summer opportunity for students who will be in grades 9-12 during the 2015-16 school year. Students will explore the concept of leadership and develop a range of skills that they will apply to areas of their own interest.
