This year marks the first annual Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, the “House App Contest.” This new competition is designed to engage student’s creativity and encourage their participation in STEM education fields. Established by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, this competition is a nationwide event that allows high school students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. Mid-Atlantic Family Engagement Contest – Apply by Feb. 3!

The Mid-Atlantic Family Engagement Award is an annual award for schools and districts that have demonstrated innovative and unique strategies to involve parents as equal partners in their child’s education. ING Unsung Heroes Awards Program
Each year, ING Unsung Heroes selects 100 educators to receive $2,000 to help fund their innovative class projects. Three of those are chosen to receive the top awards of an additional $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000. Find out more about this program. View the 2013 award winners.

Piedmont Master Gardener Association Offering $100 to $300 Grants – Deadline Extended to Feb. 21!
The Piedmont Master Gardener (PMG) Association, a volunteer organization within the Virginia Cooperative Extension, is offering grants dedicated exclusively to education related to horticulture and or gardens. The grants will range from $100-300 and may be used to purchase garden related items, not labor. Examples might be books, tools, soil tests, fertilizer, compost, mulch, seeds, plants, or instructional kits. PMG also can help with a Master Gardner if you are in need of some horticulture expertise!

CenturyLink Teachers and Technology Grant Program

Digital Wish Offering Monthly Technology Awards
Submit a lesson plans to Digital Wish and become eligible for their monthly technology awards! Each month they post a new piece of technology, such as a video camera, curriculum tools, or a video set, that they award to the teacher who submits the best lesson plan incorporating the prize. Every teacher, at some point in his or her career, is inspired by an idea that will create a unique experience and take learning to a new level in the classroom or expand students’ horizons beyond the classroom walls. Soon after inspiration comes frustration—great ideas usually require money we don’t have in order to become reality. Years ago, rather than give up on my ideas, I decided to try my hand at grant writing and have been pleasantly surprised by my success.
