Making Connections 2017Our annual ACPS Making Connections professional development day will be Monday, November 6. Like last year, we will have a variety of presenters in locations across the county. Teachers will sign up for one morning session from 8:30 to 11:30 and one afternoon session from 12:30 to 3:30. Lunch will be provided and available for teachers at their morning session. Sign up for these sessions will open on Friday, October 20!

Design for Change Challenge: Submission Deadline Extended to May 18

Design for Change USADesign for Change USA has launched their 2017-18 challenge! Design for Change is a global movement of young people who are changing the world!

How does it work? Any group of young people (K-12) with an adult mentor (teacher, parent, youth leader, or coach) dreams up and leads social change projects in their own schools or communities using the Design for Change methodology—Feel. Are you interested in GIS and GPS applications in your classroom? If so, you are in luck! ACPS is offering a free Level I introductory workshop to occur over two evenings, facilitated by Chris Bunin, a leader in K-12 GIS integration. Teachers who complete this Level I training will be invited to stipend support Level II workshops that will provide opportunities to develop GIS lessons.

Imagine a Day Without WaterWith rain levels lower than in past years, staff and students are encouraged to conserve water in our schools and at home by minimizing nonessential water use. To help students connect to the importance of water, students in grades 1-8 are invited to enter the 2017 “Imagine a Day Without Water” Student Art Contest. Poster entries will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday, October 16. (If you are a teacher with a large number of posters, you can arrange for a pick up at your school.) The NEA FoundationThe National Education Association (NEA) Foundation offers two grant opportunities for educators: Student Achievement Grants and Learning & Leadership Grants. Three grant deadlines are established annually: February 1, June 1, and October 15. Two levels of funding are available: $2,000 and $5,000.
