Meriwether Lewis Teacher Wins Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award

Va-Lottery-Super-TeacherMeriwether Lewis Elementary kicked off this morning with a school-wide assembly to celebrate 3rd grade teacher, Anne Straume. Lottery officials were in attendance to surprise Anne with a 2015 Virginia Lottery Super Teacher award, including a cash prize from the Virginia Lottery and a $2,000 classroom supply credit from The Supply Room Companies. One of eight teachers selected across the state, Anne was honored for her passion, innovation and creativity as an educator, as well as her commitment to parental and family involvement in the classroom. Pam Moran Named Virginia’s Superintendent of the Year!

Pam MoranYesterday evening at the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS) Annual Awards Banquet, our very own Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Pamela Moran, was named Virginia’s Superintendent of the Year. Dr. Moran was selected from a pool of eight regional finalists chosen from 133 superintendents in the state. In presenting the award, VASS President Alan Seibert said, “Pam Moran has demonstrated inspirational leadership in reducing major gaps among her economically disadvantaged students graduating ready for post-secondary learning.” He added, “What is particularly remarkable about Pam’s accomplishment is that it was achieved in six years under extreme budget pressure with a significant increase in the number of disadvantaged students.” Read the VASS press release »

ACPS Alumna Credits Destination Imagination (and Jim Asher!) for Her Success

DI LogoKate Bishop, ACPS alumna and current PhD student in Anthropology at the University of California, has received the National Geographic Young Explorers Grant, a prestigious grant designed to support our world’s most promising explorers. In an article posted earlier this month by Destination Imagination (DI), Kate took the opportunity to attribute who she is as a person and an archaeologist to her DI experience. She specifically thanked our own Burley Middle School principal, Jim Asher, for being a fabulous DI team manager and “the world’s most patient, supportive man.” Kate went on to say, “As a child, I had no idea the impact Destination Imagination was having on my life. Pam Moran Named Region 5 Superintendent of the Year!

Superintendent Pam MoranOur very own superintendent, Dr. Pam Moran, has been named the Region 5 School Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS). Region 5 encompasses 20 school divisions in Central Virginia. Dr. Moran was selected by a VASS committee of her peers, and she will formally be recognized at the VASS annual conference in May.
