Public Hearings on Proposed Revised Standards of Learning – Dec. 2
The Virginia Board of Education will hold four public hearings to solicit comments on the proposed revised History and Social Science, Health Education, Physical Education, and Driver Education Standards of Learning. The Standards of Learning identify the essential content, processes and skills for grade levels and subject courses. The proposed revised History and Social Science, Health Education, Physical Education, and Driver Education Standards of Learning can be accessed on the Virginia Department of Education’s Web site. Public comment regarding the proposed revised Standards of Learning may be offered through public hearings on Dec. 2 or on the Virginia Department of Education website through Nov. 24. Strong Men & Women in Virginia History Student Writing Contest – Deadline Extended to Nov. 25
High school students in Virginia are invited to honor outstanding African Americans by participating in Dominion Resources’ and the Library of Virginia’s Strong Men & Women in Virginia History student writing contest. Four winning essays will be chosen, one from each of the four regions in Virginia that Dominion serves. The deadline for entry has been extended to Tuesday, November 25, at midnight. Students are invited to submit a 400-word essay for a chance to win an Apple iPad Air and $1,000 for their school!

Special Town Hall Meetings to Discuss Five-Year Financial Plan
From mid-November through mid-December, there will be several town hall meetings conducted by members of the Board of Supervisors, who will be discussing the recent Five-Year Financial Plan – Combined. The plan includes the financial outlook for general government, capital improvements, and schools, and it will be used in the development of the respective budgets beginning next year.
