Unlike a for-profit business or a taxing authority, Albemarle County Public Schools generates a very small percentage of our budget; we depend on others to provide the revenue needed to fulfill our mission and deliver value to our stakeholders. In the current budget, approximately 70% of our revenue comes from Local Government, primarily from real estate and personal property taxes. While many localities in Virginia have offset declining real estate values with tax rate increases, most local governments still have not recovered completely from the real estate crash a few years ago, Albemarle County included. Albemarle County is under great pressure to figure out how to finance critical services, like police, fire, libraries, parks, and education.

The current fiscal year required that Albemarle County Public Schools reduce its budget by about $4 million. Revenue projections for next fiscal year do not show an increase sufficient to fund increased health insurance costs, student enrollment growth, or any initiatives needed to advance the school system’s instructional programs.
