“If I Were Mayor” Essay Contest – Submissions Due Dec. 1

If I Were MayorAttention 7th grade English and Social Studies teachers: Each fall, to help introduce students to local governments and encourage them to envision how their leadership could impact their community, the Virginia Municipal League (VML) invites all Virginia 7th graders to participate in its “If I Were Mayor” essay contest. The essays describe what the student would do as mayor to make their cities and towns great places to live. Essays must be received at the VML office by Thursday, December 1, 2016. Continue reading

Dan Mulligan Will Conduct Professional Learning Sessions on September 28 & 29

Dan MulliganDan Mulligan from Flexible Creativity will be conducting professional learning sessions for Albemarle County teachers on Wednesday, September 28, and Thursday, September 29.

On Wednesday, Dan will present the same workshop he provided for new ACPS teachers in August. The focus will be High Yield Instructional Strategies for Teaching Lifelong-Learner Competencies. He will conduct this session twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

On Thursday, Dan will conduct a full-day workshop on Building Student Academic Knowledge, with an emphasis on how teachers do this work with struggling learners. Continue reading

Deputy Superintendent Matt Haas Speaks About Changes to the High School Experience – September 21

Debate Speaker SeriesAs part of Longwood University’s Debate Speaker Series, Albemarle County Public Schools’ Deputy Superintendent Matt Haas will speak on Wednesday, September 21, about “Shifting Policy & Perspective on High School.” Light hors d’oeuvres will be served at 5 p.m., and the presentation (followed by Q&A) will begin at 5:30 p.m. Voter registration also will be available! 2016 Bird Conservation Poster Contest – Deadline: Nov. 19

2016 Bird Conservation Poster ContestThe Monticello Bird Club of Charlottesville has joined with the Blue Ridge Young Birders Club to sponsor the second annual bird conservation poster contest. Open to public, private, and home schooled students in grades K-8, this local competition challenges students to create a poster that illustrates a key conservation threat to birds and suggests a solution to the issue. 2016 Citizen Fire & Rescue Academy Begins September 22

Are you interested in learning how fire rescue uses your tax dollars or what emergency responders do while they’re not responding to an incident? If your curiosity is piqued, you should consider enrolling in Albemarle County’s 2016 Citizen Fire & Rescue Academy.

This FREE, five-night class is conducted with senior volunteer and career fire rescue personnel and provides an in-depth overview of the system. Continue reading
