Piedmont Master Gardeners 2015 School Grants – Apply by Feb. 28

GardeningGrants in the amount of $100 – $300 are available through the Piedmont Master Gardeners to be used to purchase garden related items. Examples might include books, tools, soil tests, fertilizer, compost, mulch, seeds, plants, and/or instructional kits. Applications are due in the Virginia Cooperative Extension Albemarle County Extension Office by February 28, 2015. 14th Annual Golden Apple Awards – Nominations Accepted Through Feb. 4

GA_Nominate a TeacherNominations are now open for the 14th Annual Golden Apple Awards, a program designed to honor outstanding teachers in public and private schools in Albemarle County and Charlottesville City. One winner will be selected from each school. Each award recipient will receive a Golden Apple and gift certificates from local businesses. Additionally, eight winners will receive $1,000 Golden Apple Grants, which can be used for classroom materials or to support the recipient’s professional development. CenturyLink Offering $30,000 in Grants to Connect Virginia Teachers With Technology – Apply by Jan. 2

CenturyLink LogoCenturyLink, Inc. is connecting teachers with technology for the classroom. The CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation’s Teachers and Technology grant program will consider requests of up to $5,000 submitted by full-time PK-12 teachers who want to innovatively implement technology in their classrooms to increase student achievement. Strong Men & Women in Virginia History Student Writing Contest – Deadline Extended to Nov. 25

SMW LogoHigh school students in Virginia are invited to honor outstanding African Americans by participating in Dominion Resources’ and the Library of Virginia’s Strong Men & Women in Virginia History student writing contest. Four winning essays will be chosen, one from each of the four regions in Virginia that Dominion serves. The deadline for entry has been extended to Tuesday, November 25, at midnight. Students are invited to submit a 400-word essay for a chance to win an Apple iPad Air and $1,000 for their school!

Design for Change Challenge – Project Submissions Due by May 15, 2015

Design for Change ChallengeElementary teachers: Design for Change is the largest global movement designed to give children an opportunity to express their own ideas for a better world and put them into action. The challenge asks students to design solutions for the world’s greatest challenges by doing four very simple things: FEEL (anything that bothers them), IMAGINE (brainstorm ways to make it better), DO (implement the act of change), and SHARE (send the stories to inspire others). From reducing the weight of backpacks to converting garbage dumps into playgrounds to designing alternatives to packaged food, school children across the globe are “dreaming up and leading brilliant ideas.” Continue reading

2015 School Garden Grant Application Is NOW OPEN

Whole Kids Foundation LogoWhole Kids Foundation, in partnership with FoodCorps, created the School Garden Grant program to provide a $2,000 monetary grant to a K-12 school, or a non-profit working in partnership with a K-12 school, to support a new or existing edible garden on school grounds. Applications are being accepted through October 31. Apply for a Target Field Trip Grant by October 1

Target LogoTarget Corporation is accepting applications from education professionals for the Target Field Trip Grants program, an annual program intended to fund visits to art, science, and cultural museums; community service or civic projects; career enrichment opportunities; and other events or activities away from school. More than 3,600 grants of up to $700 will be awarded in January 2015. Grants are available for field trips taking place between February and December 2015 and may be used to cover field trip-related costs such as transportation, ticket fees, food, resource materials, and supplies.
