Policy Review & Revisions

Virginia Code requires all school board policies to be reviewed at least every five years and revised as needed. On March 14, two policies were presented for action:

  • DB, Annual Budget
  • DJF, Purchasing Procedures

And, three policies were presented for information:

  • AF, Comprehensive Plan
  • BBFA, Conflict of Interest
  • EFB, Food Services

2023-24 Redistricting Study

On Feb. 22, following completion of the 2023-24 Redistricting Study, which aimed to address immediate enrollment challenges at Baker-Butler, Stony Point, and Woodbrook elementary schools and inform long-term planning for a new elementary school scheduled to open for the 2029-30 school year, Chief Operating Officer, Rosalyn Schmitt, presented the school board with the Superintendent’s Redistricting Recommendation. The board held a public hearing on the recommendation on March 14 and then unanimously approved the recommendation during the same meeting. The approved boundary changes will be implemented for the 2024-25 school year.

School Naming Review

Karen Waters, Director of Community Education, presented the school board with an update on school naming reviews, including a summary of reviews that have been conducted so far and a recommendation to change the name of Agnor-Hurt Elementary School to Agnor Elementary School, effective July 1, 2024. The board will vote on the recommendation on March 28.

Approval of FY 25 Funding Request

Following the presentation of the Draft Funding Request, two budget work sessions, and a public hearing, the school board approved the Funding Request for Fiscal Year 2024-25 (FY 25) during their March 14 meeting. Budget materials, including the budget document and presentations, can be viewed on the 2024-25 Budget Development web page. The board is scheduled to adopt a final and balanced budget on April 25.

Using Mid-Year Data to Meet Our Mission

Assessment and accreditation results are a key metric to gauge the division’s progress toward meeting our mission. During the March 14 meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Strategic Planning, Patrick McLaughlin, presented the board with an update on second quarter assessment data and an overview of how that data is used to improve instruction and outcomes.
