Each year, The National Endowment for the Humanities offers tuition-free opportunities for school, college and university educators to study a variety of humanities topics. Stipends of $1,200-$3,900 help cover expenses for these one- to five-week programs. ACPS teachers who have attended past programs have raved about the content and experience. Superintendent Blogs About Our Funding Challenge
Funding from the Commonwealth for K-12 education has dropped over the past seven years. This drop has shifted the burden of responsibility for education in Albemarle and other localities to local taxpayers’ property taxes. If per pupil revenues from the state had remained flat over this time period, Albemarle County Public Schools would have no funding gap in the 2015-16 funding request because we would receive $3.8 million in additional state revenues for FY16. Spelling Bee Rescheduled for February 25
The Albemarle County Spelling Bee, originally scheduled for this evening, February 18, has been postponed due to inclement weather. The Spelling Bee now will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, at the County Office Building, Lane Auditorium, 401 McIntire Road, Charlottesville.
Making Up Inclement Weather Days
A quick reminder on how we are making up inclement weather days in our 2014-15 Calendar: On January 20, we made up the day missed on January 14. The missed day of school on February 17 will be made up on April 3. The next two inclement weather days will be made up on June 8 and 9. Continue reading

Green Classroom Pledge Contest – Open Through April 30
The Green Classroom Pledge outlines simple ways a classroom can have a significant impact on the environment. Although the actions may seem small and insignificant on the individual level, by working together the classroom can have a big collective impact. Students are also encouraged to help their families save energy, waste and water at home by implementing some of the items on the pledge. Continue reading
Approval Process for Research Requests From Outside Agencies
Albemarle County Public Schools receives requests from outside agencies/individuals to conduct research in the schools. If an ACPS employee receives a request from an outside agency, including UVA, the employee must forward that request to a supervisor (principal, for example). These requests must be forwarded to Chris Gilman, Coordinator of Research and Program Evaluation, as a detailed proposal indicating the purpose of the study and how the results may be used. Summer Workshop Opportunity: The Long Road From Brown – Apply by Mar. 2
Middle and high school teachers are invited to apply to participate in a one-week workshop, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, on school desegregation in Virginia and the historic Brown v. Board of Education decision. During this workshop, to be held in late July 2015 in Richmond, Virginia, teachers will interact with leading scholars in the field, visit historic sites and archives related to school desegregation in Virginia, and discuss curricular and instructional strategies related to teaching this subject.
