If I Were MayorAttention 7th grade English and Social Studies teachers: Each fall, to help introduce students to local governments and encourage them to envision how their leadership could impact their community, the Virginia Municipal League (VML) invites all Virginia 7th graders to participate in its “If I Were Mayor” essay contest. 2016 Bird Conservation Poster ContestThe Monticello Bird Club of Charlottesville has joined with the Blue Ridge Young Birders Club to sponsor the second annual bird conservation poster contest. Open to public, private, and home schooled students in grades K-8, this local competition challenges students to create a poster that illustrates a key conservation threat to birds and suggests a solution to the issue. Connecting Mathematics to Other Subject Areas Grants (Grades 9-12) – Due Nov. 4

NCTMThe National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is accepting applications to its Connecting Mathematics to Other Subject Areas Grants for Grades 9-12 Teachers program, which supports senior high classroom materials or lessons that connect mathematics to other fields. For 2017-18, individual grants up to $4,000 will be awarded to current high school math teachers. Materials may be in the form of books, visual displays, computer programs or displays, slide shows, videotapes, or other appropriate medium. The focus of these materials should be on showing the connectivity of mathematics to other fields or to the world around us. The application packet must be postmarked by November 4, 2016. The program provides support to public school teachers, counselors, and education support professionals* toward participation in high-quality professional development experiences. Action for Healthy KidsAction for Healthy Kids is offering two grant opportunities to help schools implement health and wellness practices: Up to 550 schools will receive School Breakfast Grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 to support increased breakfast participation, and 500 schools will be awarded Game On Grants ranging from $500 to $2,500 for physical activity and nutrition initiatives that promote student health.   • Level 1 grants, not to exceed $750, will be awarded to classroom teachers for projects that support original and innovative student activities.
  • Level 2 grants, not to exceed $5,000, may be awarded to schools for creative projects that enhance student learning across age and grade levels.

Poetry & Prose Contests for Middle and High School Students

Virginia Festival of the BookThe Virginia Festival of the Book has announced their annual Poetry & Prose Contests for middle and high school students! Selected students will be invited to read aloud their winning entries at the Poetry & Prose Celebration on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at 7 p.m. at the Charlottesville Omni Hotel. Selected submissions will be printed in the Festival’s annual anthology for middle school writers or Crossroads, the annual teen anthology for Central Virginia, coordinated by the Tupelo Press Teen Writing Center.
