Piedmont Master Gardener Association Offering $100 to $300 Grants – Deadline Extended to Feb. 21!

GardeningThe Piedmont Master Gardener (PMG) Association, a volunteer organization within the Virginia Cooperative Extension, is offering grants dedicated exclusively to education related to horticulture and or gardens. The grants will range from $100-300 and may be used to purchase garden related items, not labor. Examples might be books, tools, soil tests, fertilizer, compost, mulch, seeds, plants, or instructional kits. PMG also can help with a Master Gardner if you are in need of some horticulture expertise!

Teachers: VDOE Wants YOUR Feedback to Improve the Division of Instruction Website

VDOE LogoPlease help the Virginia Department of Education’s Division of Instruction evaluate the use of their website and other means to communicate important information to teachers by taking this short survey. It should take between 5-10 minutes. Your responses are anonymous and will be used to help the Division of Instruction improve the way they communicate and work with you. The survey will be available until midnight on Wednesday, December 18.

Grant Development Workshop at the University of Richmond

School Board Urges General Assembly to Support Balanced Student Assessments

Performance TaskIn its annual meeting with state legislators who represent Albemarle County in 2012, the School Board briefed legislators on the need for more balanced and relevant student assessments beyond the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests now in use across the state. As a result of the meeting, legislation was filed in the General Assembly that would eventually give school divisions the option of employing performance-based assessments to measure and align student learning with college and workforce readiness. Grant MoneyEvery teacher, at some point in his or her career, is inspired by an idea that will create a unique experience and take learning to a new level in the classroom or expand students’ horizons beyond the classroom walls. Soon after inspiration comes frustration—great ideas usually require money we don’t have in order to become reality. Years ago, rather than give up on my ideas, I decided to try my hand at grant writing and have been pleasantly surprised by my success.
