Governor’s Report from SOL Innovation Committee

VA SealThe Standards of Learning (SOL) Innovation Committee was created in the 2014 legislative session. The purpose of the Committee is to provide the Board of Education and General Assembly with suggestions on changes to the SOL assessments, authentic individual student growth measures, alignment between the Standards of Learning and assessment, and ideas on innovative teaching in the classroom.

On November 6, 2014, the Committee voted unanimously to approve a set of 12 interim recommendations. For more information, you can read the Committee’s Executive Summary and full report.

Virginia Counsel on Women 2015 STEM Essay Contest – Deadline: Feb. 25

VA Council on WomenThe Virginia Council on Women is pleased to host the 4th annual STEM Essay Contest. Governor Terry McAuliffe and First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe serve as Honorary Co-Chairs for the contest.

The Council will award one $5,000 scholarship to a female junior or senior who will be pursuing a STEM career at an institution of higher education. Other scholarships may be awarded at the discretion of the Council. Essays will be judged by a panel of Council members and women who hold a degree in or work in STEM fields. Route 29 Solutions

Route 29 SolutionsAs you’re probably aware, the Commonwealth Transportation Board approved funding for a series of projects along the Route 29 corridor this past June, an investment of over $250 million in our community. This series of projects, the “Route 29 Solutions” package, will increase capacity and efficiency along Route 29, while providing alternate routes on parallel roads to help reduce congestion on Route 29.
