Important Information About the Unemployment Compensation Application Process: Possible Fraud

Fraud Detection

The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) notifies our Human Resources Department whenever it receives an unemployment compensation claim from a former Albemarle County Public Schools employee. Our department recently received several notifications of claims for current employees that include personal information that, after an initial investigation, we believe in some cases to be fraudulent. The individuals have been directly notified by Human Resources and provided instructions for next steps.

We are sharing this information with the whole organization because we want to make you are aware of our investigation and next steps:

  • The Information Technology Department has completed an investigation into any cybersecurity incidents that could have resulted in a data breach and has found no evidence of a breach.
  • The Albemarle County Police Department has been notified.
  • The VEC’s Fraud Division has been notified.

As you know, Albemarle County Public Schools takes cybersecurity and the security of personnel information seriously. As our investigation continues, know that we will take corrective action.
