Each year, the Virginia Department of Education awards Mathematics and Science Partnership grants to increase the content knowledge and sharpen the classroom skills of teachers in science and mathematics. These grants allow public and private colleges and universities to provide high-quality, professional development to teachers in an effort to reduce achievement gaps in math and science among student groups while raising achievement of all students.

This year, ACPS and UVA were awarded one of these partnership grants, offering an opportunity for ACPS elementary teachers to work together with UVA and the Curry School to integrate science and literacy through the practices of project-based learning.

Highlights:

  • Summer Institute (10 days) emphasizing science content and pedagogy each year
  • Academic year follow-up (4 days) and in-classroom coaching support each year
  • $1000 stipend each year of participation
  • Resources including NSTA SciPacks
  • Develop curricular materials that integrate science and literacy through problem-based learning
  • Collaborate with fellow ACPS elementary teachers
