Budget Update – May 2, 2018
Dear Colleagues:
Our theme for this year’s budget that was just approved, is Albemarle Forward: Equity & Opportunity. Our 2018-19 operating budget provides the resources that will bring that objective to life. I’m confident that those resources, matched with our incredibly talented and dedicated team, mean it’s only a matter of time until that theme becomes a reality. That will only happen because of each of you and your work to ensure that, in every department and every school, we are leveraging our resources to achieve our vision, mission, and one strategic goal.
This is the last budget process that I will oversee as superintendent, and for the first time since 2008, I believe that the challenging times of the great recession had little to no impact on this year’s budget. Continue reading
2018-19 Superintendent’s Funding Request

AlbemarleForward: Equity & Opportunity is the title of the 2018-19 funding request I presented to our School Board last week, and it sums up the extraordinary work now before us.
Funding requests are value statements and, especially at this time, our values compel us to make equal the learning experiences we offer to all students and to have them leave us fully prepared to realize their highest potential for lifelong success. This means that the goals before us are to eliminate the predictive impact that race, class, gender, and special capacities have on student success; to increase career readiness skills for all students; and to support the professionals who will deliver these results. 2018-19 Budget Survey Open Through Dec. 3
Albemarle County Public Schools is beginning to develop the 2018-19 Superintendent’s Funding Request. As we embark on this budget development process, your input is of great importance to us. The 2018-19 Budget Survey is designed to help the school division understand how well we have communicated the annual budget process to our community and to determine the degree to which our community members support various research-based proposals for improving our services. Board of Supervisors Adopts FY18 Budget
On Monday, May 15, 2017, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors conducted a public hearing on the Calendar Year 17 Tax Rate. Formal approval of the tax rate and adoption of the FY 18 budget followed that public hearing.
The adopted Fiscal Year 2018 combined capital and operating budget totals $397,897,173 and is balanced with a tax rate of $0.839 per $100 of assessed value. Continue reading
Budget Update – Feb. 22, 2017

At their February 7th work session, our School Board adopted a funding request for the 2017-18 school year. The interim county executive, Doug Walker, presented his recommended budget, including the School Board’s funding request, on February 17. Based upon Mr. Walker’s presentation, no property tax increases would be necessary for 2017-18. Continue reading
Community Outreach Survey: Summary Report
From November 16-27, 2016, we received 1,119 responses to our Community Outreach Survey from ACPS students, parents, employees, and community members. Our goal in administering this survey was to provide, define, and give examples of research-based elements of effective schools and ask our stakeholders to rank them in order of our effectiveness, and in so doing, provide an opportunity for community input to assist the Superintendent and School Board in developing a funding request for 2017-18.
