If you had the chance to read our recent news release and latest report to the school board on our division’s Standards of Learning (SOL) pass rates, you know that these rates, for a significant number of our students, did not meet the state standard. Math and reading scores for our Black and Hispanic students, those from economically disadvantaged homes, English Learners, and students with disabilities were significantly below passing. We are excited to welcome you to the 2022-23 school year! On Tuesday, August 16, we will be hosting a division-wide convocation in which all division employees will be meeting at Ting Pavilion on the Downtown Mall.

We will be gathering together as one team to celebrate the hard work each of you engage in every day to ensure that students are provided the best we have to offer. Each one of you impacts the work we do with our students, families, and members of the community. Our convocation is an opportunity to recognize all of the professionals who create an environment in which our students are seen, heard and known by those who support them!

Reaffirming Our Values & Commitments to Our Students & to One Another

Good afternoon, everyone, and thank you for all you are doing to support our students, families, and each other! I appreciate you taking a few minutes to read this important message.

The recent racially-motivated violence in Buffalo and the discovery of the shooter’s “hit list” that contained an elementary school is another painful reminder of the importance of both our nation’s commitment to anti-racism and the difficulty of its implementation. Across our nation, more and more communities are scarred by violence against our national cultures and values, most especially, but not exclusively, violence that targets our Black communities. Special Message from the Superintendent: Employee Engagement Survey Extended Through May 12

When I became Superintendent of Schools in 2018, my first order of business was a Listening Tour. I met with hundreds of employees and students across our division to understand how I could best support you in your work, not just in providing resources, but in helping to create a climate that allowed you to prosper and grow as a professional.

If you read my Weekly Check-in on Friday, you know that one of the most important parts of my week, every week, are my visits to one of our schools or departments. These visits are today’s Listening Tours, providing me with the chance to learn from many of you about how the school division can support you and, especially, how I can support you in the important work you are doing. A Special Message to Employees From the Superintendent

Superintendent Haas visited Monticello High School on Friday, January 21, to serve as a substitute teacher, following similar visits to Albemarle and Western Albemarle high schools. The visit gave Dr. Haas the opportunity to meet with both students and staff and to share a message of gratitude for the extraordinary contributions all employees are making to families, students, and to one another in the current environment.

All Regular Employees to Receive a 4% Pay Increase

During the first school board meeting of the new year, held yesterday evening, Albemarle County School Board members voted unanimously to approve a recommendation from Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Matthew Haas, that all regular employees receive a 4% pay increase effective with the pay period that begins February 26, 2022. The first paycheck to reflect the increase will be on Friday, March 18, 2022. Continue reading →

2022-23 Budget Survey: Please Participate by Dec. 22

Albemarle County Public Schools staff are working hard to develop a draft budget for next school year. Your views are an important part of that work. This fall, we hosted several community conversations in which we invited students, employees, families, and advisory groups to share ideas for improving teaching and learning in our schools.
