Instruction in Motion: Bringing PE into the Classroom

PE in the ClassroomThere is a body of research that the brain sustains focus with natural light, fresh air, and movement. Many of our elementary school educators use “get up and move” activities  routinely during the day. Physical Education teachers often help with strategies to increase physical activity in the classroom beyond PE and recess opportunities. Arts, Culture & Design in Schools Grants – Apply by April 30

Art ProgramsThinking ahead to next year? Each Arts, Culture & Design in Schools Grant from Target is $2,000. Grant applications will be accepted through 1 p.m. EDT on April 30. Apply now!

Target funds in-school arts programs that enhance students’ classroom curricula by bringing the arts and cultural experiences to schools, such as in-school performances, artist-in-residency programs, and workshops in schools. Programs must take place between September 2014 and August 2015.

Stratford Hall Summer Institute for Teachers, July 16-19

Stratford HallFrom the afternoon of July 16 through noon on July 19, 2014, teachers from across Virginia and the nation will have the opportunity to experience life on an 18th century colonial plantation, Stratford Hall, on the Potomac River south of Washington, D.C. The 4th Annual Stratford Hall Summer Institute will focus on Stratford Hall, the Lee family, and the Atlantic world in the revolutionary period.  Topics of study will include slavery, politics of revolution in Virginia, domestic life, and the relationship of private life to public affairs of the American Revolution.

2014 STEM Essay Contest – Application Deadline: March 30

VA Council on WomenYoung women in their junior or senior year in high school who hold at least a 2.5 GPA are invited to participate in the 2014 STEM Essay Contest, presented by the Virginia Council on Women in collaboration with the Science Museum of Virginia. The awardee will receive a $5,000 scholarship to an institution of higher education. Entries must be received by 9 p.m. on March 30, 2014. Governor Terry McAuliffe and First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe serve as Honorary Co-Chairs for the contest. Find out more >>>
