Summer Fine Arts Academy Now Accepting Registrations

Fine Arts LogoACPS is launching its first Fine Arts Academy this summer from July 21-25! Students currently in grades 6-11 (rising 7th – 12th graders for 2014-15) can choose to spend their week focused on art, creative writing, dance, drama, choir, or jazz band. The registration fee is $100 for all sessions that run from 9 a.m. to noon. Art students have the option of adding three hours to their class for an additional $50. Update on Classification Review of Teaching Assistants

Teaching AssistantAs part of our Total Compensation Strategy, Human Resources conducts comprehensive classification reviews of all departments and/or work groups on an ongoing basis. Our objective is to ensure that all School Division and Local Government positions are correctly classified and that all employees are appropriately compensated for the work they perform. Over the last year, we have conducted classification reviews of a number of departments, to include Building Services and General Services. Currently, we are conducting a classification review of Teaching Assistant (and similarly classified) positions. Continue reading

The purpose of this memo is to inform you of several changes in school health laws passed by the 2014 General Assembly and signed by the Governor. Changes in student rights to carry diabetes supplies and self-manage diabetes, immunization changes, and the designation of a private place for employees and students to breastfeed were all addressed in this session. Recently, the  University of Virginia Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) announced this year’s award recipients. Each year, the chapter solicits nominations from school divisions in the county and Charlottesville City, as well as Fluvanna, Greene and Nelson counties to recognize some of our outstanding practitioners who best represent the chapter’s principles of research, leadership and service.

VAST Mini-Grant for Teaching – Apply by June 1

VAST LogoThe Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) Mini-Grant Program seeks to provide seed money for innovative curriculum activities that expand learning opportunities for science students. Individual and team applications are now being accepted! The Project Director must be a member of VAST (dues paid for 2014), must have taught at the elementary or secondary level for a minimum of three years, and must be currently employed as a teacher. It is anticipated that most awards will be made in the range of $200-$500. Grant applications are due by June 1. Get more details >>>

2014 ACTION! High School Director Competition

VA Film FestivalThe Virginia Film Festival (VFF) encourages students to take their passion for filmmaking and create an entry for ACTION!, the VFF’s High School Director Competition. The 2014 ACTION! Competition is open to rising 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students who are current residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia. One Grand Prize winner will receive a check for $1,000, and two runners-up will each receive a check for $500.
