Lee-Jackson Educational Foundation Scholarship Program – Apply by Feb. 6

Lee-JacksonThe Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce the Charlottesville Lee-Jackson Educational Foundation Scholarship Program. The objective of the program is to acquaint young people with the historical legacy of two of Virginia’s most outstanding military figures, General Robert E. Lee and General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.

Eighteen scholarships will be awarded to Virginia high school juniors and seniors submitting outstanding analytical essays on any aspect—positive or negative—of the career, character or legacy of General Robert E. Lee and/or General “Stonewall” Jackson.

The deadline for students to submit applications and essays to their high school principals is February 6, 2015. Continue reading

Piedmont Master Gardeners 2015 School Grants – Apply by Feb. 28

GardeningGrants in the amount of $100 – $300 are available through the Piedmont Master Gardeners to be used to purchase garden related items. Examples might include books, tools, soil tests, fertilizer, compost, mulch, seeds, plants, and/or instructional kits. Applications are due in the Virginia Cooperative Extension Albemarle County Extension Office by February 28, 2015. This yearlong professional development program is designed to reward, foster and grow a community of 100 tech-savvy educators making an impact in their classrooms.

County Coat Drive Accepting Donations Through January 30

County Coat DriveAgain this winter, Albemarle County is running a coat drive to collect coats, jackets and sweatshirts. But that’s not all! The coat drive also is accepting donations of sweaters, shirts, socks, shoes, hats, scarves and gloves!

The drive is now open and will run through January 30, 2015. Some of the coats collected will go to the Hinton Avenue Clothes Closet, and others will go to Albemarle County schools that will distribute to neighbors in need. Continue reading
