Field Trip Grants from Target – Apply by September 30

Target LogoTarget funds programs that allow students and teachers to learn in all kinds of settings, including field trips! To help connect students’ classroom curricula to out-of-school experiences, Target awards Field Trip Grants valued up to $700 to K-12 schools nationwide. The grant application process opens at noon CST on August 1 and closes at noon CST on September 30. Field trips must take place between February and December 2016.

Monticello’s Learning Commons Receives National Coverage

Earlier this year, when Monticello High School’s Learning Commons won the 2015 Magna Award, Albemarle County Public Schools became the first school division in the country to twice be honored by the National School Boards Association (NSBA) as a national leader in innovative school programming. In its June 2015 issue of American School Board Journal, NSBA highlights the Learning Commons as an example of our division’s emphasis on project-based learning and on developing greater creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among all students. Read the cover story, Making It Real: The Maker movement spurs students to rediscover the joy of creating.

Virginia Bio Foundation Beer and BioTeach Event – May 21

VAbio LogoThe Virginia BIO Foundation, a not for profit foundation created to connect bioscience companies with teachers and students to stimulate career interest in the biosciences (BioSTEM), is hosting a teachers only event from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on May 21 at five locations throughout Virginia. BioTeach is intended to provide an opportunity for K-12 science teachers to see how the bioscience industry puts science to work by creating products and services that improve human health. Mockingbird Music Education Grant – Apply by August 1

Mockingbird-FoundationThe Mockingbird Foundation offers competitive grants to schools and nonprofit organizations that effect improvements in music education for children. Grants range in size from $100 to $5,000, are made on a one-time basis, and are non-renewable and non-transferable. Meriwether Lewis Teacher Wins Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award

Va-Lottery-Super-TeacherMeriwether Lewis Elementary kicked off this morning with a school-wide assembly to celebrate 3rd grade teacher, Anne Straume. Lottery officials were in attendance to surprise Anne with a 2015 Virginia Lottery Super Teacher award, including a cash prize from the Virginia Lottery and a $2,000 classroom supply credit from The Supply Room Companies. One of eight teachers selected across the state, Anne was honored for her passion, innovation and creativity as an educator, as well as her commitment to parental and family involvement in the classroom. 2015-16 Opportunities CatalogThe Professional Development (PD) Team is excited to offer ALL ACPS educators another amazing summer of learning. All licensed instructional staff will participate in at least two three-hour sessions in the Digital Learning Initiative (DLI) portion of the 2015-16 Professional Development Opportunities Course Catalog this July or August.
