February 19 – Now a Make-up Day!

February 19School will be in session on Monday, February 19, to make up for the closure on January 8.

Important Note: February 19 will serve as the only inclement weather make-up day for the 2017-18 school year. Remaining days missed due to inclement weather will be made up with hours accumulated by the schools in excess of the minimum 990 hours required by the standards of accreditation.

School Board Meeting Update

Last month, I sent you a report on the December 14 School Board meeting as a way of keeping you informed about the issues being considered by the Board and their decisions. I’d like to send these reports after each Board meeting, since so many of our Board’s actions will impact you.

The Board has met twice since December 14, including their organizational and first business meeting of 2018 on January 11. Also, last evening, a special meeting was held during which Dr. Moran and I presented the 2018-19 fiscal year funding request for our school division. Continue reading

On February 22, at 10 a.m. and again at 1 p.m., the National WWII Museum presents Fighting for the Right to Fight: African American Experiences in World War II. In this interactive cross-country journey, students in grades 6-12 learn how the pursuit for both victory and equality shaped the story of World War II and transformed the U.S. for decades to come.

Deadline for VAHPERD’s Annual Film Festival Competition Extended to Mar. 15

VAHPERD LogoThe Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (VAHPERD) has extended the due date for the 2017-18 Film/Video Competition to March 15, 2018. This competition is part of VAHPERD’s Choose Your Vibe – Arrive Alive underage drinking and impaired driving campaign funded through a highway safety alcohol grant from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The competition allows middle and high school students to develop short persuasive videos that encourage students to make safe and healthy choices, and by doing so prevent underage drinking and impaired driving.
