Challenger disaster: McAuliffe’s students go on to teach

Superintendent Pam MoranAs we return to work, I am reminded of where I stood on January 28, 1986. I was in a middle school watching the Challenger launch on TV and cheering on a teacher member of the mission. Moments later, America watched the shuttle parts spiral downward in its devastating journey back to earth. Today, on the 30th anniversary of the Challenger space shuttle disaster, I was inspired to see how one teacher’s legacy encouraged her students to join our profession. I think about young teachers in our ranks today—former Albemarle students—here because teachers among us catalyzed them to seek to teach. I think about each of you who chose this profession likely because of a teacher in your life. And I remember Christa McAuliffe. Continue reading

As you gather your information for the IRS income tax filing season, Payroll has some important information to share regarding your W-4 form (Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate) for 2016. Your W-4 tells Payroll the amount of tax to withhold from your paycheck. Situations when you might need to change your W-4 include marriage, divorce, having a child, or if you discover through filing your federal income tax return that you had too little or too much withheld from your pay. 2016-17 Calendar: Two Drafts Posted for Feedback – Survey Closes Jan. 27 at Noon

Tell Us What You ThinkSchool division staff presented an initial draft (Draft A) of the 2016-17 School Year Calendar to the School Board on January 14, 2016. This initial draft was the product of two joint City/County Calendar Committee meetings, during which internal and external stakeholder input was considered. Based on feedback from the Board, a second version (Draft B) was created for consideration. Employees, parents and students have been invited to provide feedback on the two drafts, which will be reviewed by the Board at their regularly scheduled meeting on January 28.

Don’t Forget: Transition Your Google Apps Data by Jan. 15!

Transition Data by January 15, 2016!As you know, DART staff has consolidated our two Google domains into one. Students and staff using the student domain were asked to transition data and functionality from the student domain to the primary ACPS domain. The deadline for this data transition is January 15, 2016. After January 15, the @student.k12albemarle.org domain will be decommissioned and all data within that domain will be deleted.
