During the first school board meeting of the new year, held yesterday evening, Albemarle County School Board members voted unanimously to approve a recommendation from Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Matthew Haas, that all regular employees receive a 4% pay increase effective with the pay period that begins February 26, 2022. Albemarle County Public Schools staff are working hard to develop a draft budget for next school year. Your views are an important part of that work. This fall, we hosted several community conversations in which we invited students, employees, families, and advisory groups to share ideas for improving teaching and learning in our schools. This week, Superintendent Haas visited Monticello’s football field with a very special video message for our school community. Please help us celebrate and support all of our teams and student performers, including football, field hockey, volleyball, cross country, golf, mountain biking, cheer, scholastic bowl, and our fine arts, by staying safe in the stands and encouraging excellence on the field and stage.
Congratulations, everyone, on completing what will no doubt be remembered as the most challenging school year we have experienced. As we close out the 2020-21 school year, my hope is that each of you will take time over the summer to rest, reset and recharge. You deserve it!

Dear Colleagues:
As I reported to you earlier this month, two of the public health measures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were increasing following the holiday period, placing us in a higher risk category for the transmission of the COVID-19 virus in our county. It was on this basis that I determined that the safest course for our students, families and staff was to revert to all-virtual instruction.
I also said we would continue to work with the health department and closely monitor these public health measures and report back to you today on our plans for next week. Continue reading

Working with the health department, I have closely been tracking the virus transmission data in our school community. Like many of you, I have become increasingly concerned about recent increases in the case incidence rate and the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests in our county as reported by our health department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Since the holidays, increases in these two measures signify increases in the spread of the COVID-19 virus in our county. Continue reading
